TMD refers to “temporomandibular disorder,” a disorder of the temporomandibular joint (the joint located in front of each ear) and associated muscles and nerves. A problem in this area can be caused by:
- Whiplash
- Grinding your teeth
- Arthritis in the joint
- Chronic stress
TMD can cause pain or tenderness in the jaw, neck, shoulder or face. It may hurt to chew or open the mouth widely, and the jaw may click or grate when it’s moved, among other symptoms.
We can help by providing a patient with a mouth guard to adjust the position of the lower jaw. For many people, this is enough to allow the joint to heal so the symptoms will subside.
